STEP 1 Enroll in eduGuard’s 8 hour course “Power to Arrest and Weapons of Mass Destruction” and pass the examination.
STEP 2 Fill out the form, “Security Guard Registration” and submit the security guard application either by mail or online with BreEZe. To see the BSIS requirements, get the Security Guard Fact Sheet, at the “BSIS website“. Note: If done online you will receive your California Guard Card in a few days instead of a few weeks. Typical fees for submitting an application is $50, with an additional $1 convenience fee if done online.
STEP 3 Submit your fingerprints electronically using Live Scan. You can find Live Scan locations here: “Live Scan Locations“. You must download the security guard Live Scan forms from here: “Live Scan Forms” or by contacting them at (916) 322-4000 or (800) 952-5210. It is necessary to get the correct coding from BSIS on your forms for the FBI and DOJ to ensure BSIS receives their responses. The cost for Live Scan can vary due to the fee for the Live Scan Site but is approximately $32 for the DOJ and $19 for the FBI.
Watch our video to see how to get a Live Scan.
STEP 4 Upon the criminal background checks and application being accepted, BSIS will post your cleared security guard status online here at the BSIS website. You can then print your cleared security guard status and present it to your prospective employer for employment. Note: You do not need your actual guard card in hand to apply for employment just the print out is sufficient. After the cleared status you will receive your actual guard card in the mail in approximately 10 to 15 days.
After you have received and completed your initial 8 hours of training for the California Guard Card, you will be required to complete an additional 16 hours of training within 30 days after employment. You will then be required to complete another 16 hours of training within 6 months after employment for your total required 40 hours of training. Note: You can complete the total 40 hours of training before employment.
The cleared security guard printout or the guard card document must remain with you while working, in addition to a valid photo identification card.
